Exploring Salt Lake City Week 1

Day 10 - Salt Lake City, UT.

When we arrived at the Avenues Hostel our initial impression was the following: great private room, laundry on site, clean, mini fridge, free breakfast. This place is awesome. All those things were true. But the next day we awoke to the sounds of snickering and realized that the lady next door had a habit of making bizarre noises for hours on end and talking to herself. Then whenever one of us would exit our room into the hallway, she would simultaneously open up the door and without a word, simply stare at you. So we decided we needed to look into an alternative housing situation.

Jeremy wanted to take a break from running - our calves and glutes were still sore from Saturday's hike into the Canyon. Besides we had a lot to do. Camping creates a ton of laundry. Everything that we owned smelled strongly of campfire and the woods, which I personally love but Jeremy felt that it needed cleaning.

That evening we attended our first Wilderness Medicine class at the University of Utah.  I was pretty sure that this class was going to be awesome but now I’m 100% convinced. Dr. Ingebretson is an amazing instructor and he even got us a place to stay with a fellow medical student, Mike. Apparently all of the University of Utah students are currently suffering through a month long “Transition to Residency” class that goes from 8am-5pm daily. It’s funny to hear them complain about being guinea pigs for a new curriculum at their school since Jeremy and I have no idea what that’s like (sarcasm).
We spent the evening at Legends watching Louisville defeat Michigan over a couple of weak (4%) Squatters brews.

Day 11 - Salt Lake City, UT
Salt Lake City is a mecca of outdoors shops. We located a Backcountry.com warehouse and headed over since this simply does not exist in the Northeast. The foodtruck outside had the best cheese and chicken quesadilla of my life.

We're also starting to realize that our hostel is occupied by homeless, psychologically unstable people. They don't seem to bother us but it's a little unsettling. Today the homeless people discussed how being drunk gives them the giggles.

Day 12 - Salt Lake City, UT; Sandy, UT

We're glad to be leaving the Avenues Hostel today after the bizarre lady has been staring at us through the crack of her door every morning. After departing we went to eat at the Blue Plate diner where we ate Huevos Rancheros and Mexican Eggs Benedict because Mexican food in the southwest is about a billion times better than back east.

I need to acknowledge that this life is pretty incredible. While we have to spend a good deal of time every morning working on residency paperwork and online trainings we are able to get to the climbing gym and go for runs every day. Janae recommended a gym called Momentum so we purchased a couples 2 week pass and hit the largest indoor climbing gym in the area.

Day 13- Salt Lake City, UT; Sandy, UT

We finished the last of our residency paperwork and ran some errands. But the best part of the day by far was the Diving Lecture in which one of the Emergency Medicine told us his story about living with a aboriginal tribe off the coast of Taiwan where they hunt Octopus. He himself had participated in the killing of an Octopus.  Because Octopus have some many tentacles and a decentralized nervous system they’re very difficult to kill and it’s difficult to get to the head. So the hunter had to grab the whole Octopus, reach back into its eye and pull out it’s Optic nerve. He then showed the optic nerve to the now resident and motioned for him to bite it. The resident bit threw the optic nerve and the octopus went limp. While it was still alive he then cut off its tentacles and swallowed one whole, feeling it suction to different parts of his GI tract as it made its way down.  This again confirms that this is the best medical school class ever!
