Destination: Salt Lake City

Day 9 - Stops: Grand Canyon, AZ; Kanab, UT; Salt Lake City, UT.

Because when camping you need no alarm to wake up at 7am, we left the Grand Canyon early the next morning and made our way to Salt Lake City. Unfortunately there was a huge detour that added 1.5 miles to our trip but brought us through a town called Tuba City, AZ. Not much happening in Tuba City except gas stations and some restaurants, but regardless I was excited by the name.

Finally we crossed the bordered into Utah after Lake Powell (named for the same guy that "discovered" the Grand Canyon as he canoed down the Colorado River and ran into the Canyon. Of course, the Native Americans had discovered the Canyon long before Mr. Powell). It's a beautiful lake that bordered Arizona and Utah.
Utah thinks quite highly of itself.
We started to finally see some interesting terrain as we crossed into Utah. And we reached what seemed like a real city- Kanab is near the border had a few more things to offer than the towns we had passed in Arizona. So we stopped off at the Rocking V Cafe which is a gem of a restaurant in Kanab. Jeremy got the Kanabadabadoo burger and I ate the Deep Dish Enchilada.

From Kanab the scenery grew from rolling hills to mountains as we finally came upon the Wasatch mountains that reach well beyond Salt Lake City. Again there was lots of cattle and farmland. We reached Utah, checked into the Avenues Hostel where we would spend 3 nights and did our HIPPA and OSHA training for our Wilderness Medicine class at the University of Utah (the U of U).
